Grand Canyon Lodge

The Grand Canyon Lodge is proudly posted at Bright Angle Point, a promontory on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.

First opened in 1928, tragically in 1932 the main lodge was lost to fire. After an extensive rebuild the new Grand Canyon Lodge was reopened in 1937.

Built primarily of natural stone, Ponderosa pine logs and log-slab siding. This rustic example of western architecture is banked along several levels that step down with the natural fall of the canyon rim.

The interior follows with the rustic western theme, most walls are stone and or logs. The main lodge contains a beautiful lobby, the dining room, a recreation room, an interesting western saloon, along with a glorious sun room. The furnishings are comfortable and offer guests a place to relax and enjoy grand views of the Grand Canyon National Park.

The Grand Canyon Lodge North as some call it consists of the main lodge and numerous cabins scattered around the facilities shaded pines. These cabins are what most people reserve, even though there are a few lodge hotel rooms available.

All of the cabins are either close to the rim of the canyon or just a short walk from it. There are three styles/sizes of cabins available, from spacious two bed room units with a full bath and front porch, down to some small basic one room cabins with a 3/4 bath /shower only.

I have stayed in both a small unit and one of the mid-sized pioneer cabins. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit both times. The small cabins are basic but comfortable. We did not spend a lot of time in the cabins anyway except to sleep. There is to much to see and enjoy up at the Grand Canyon Lodge, along the many scenic trails and scenic viewing areas.

We spent a lot of time up at the main lodge enjoying the many fascinating levels and guest areas. Some are rustically decorated with wrought-iron chandeliers, Native American painting and art. There is a massive fireplace large enough for a grown person to stand in. Throughout the buildings many levels you will find a variety of porticoes, open terraces, and viewing decks that will provide a panorama of spectacular views of the canyon.

We took most of our meals at the main lodge. The dining room is expansive and memorable with huge picture windows that allow you to enjoy the beautiful canyon vistas while you dine. The selection of cuisine is well prepared and the atmosphere is relaxed. The western saloon offers a unique place for guests to gather and unwind or just grab a snack after a day of hiking along the many scenic trails.

The nights here are wonderful you might find a group of guests out on a viewing deck with telescopes looking at the stars. But for me the sunrise and sunsets are what is the most special about the Grand Canyon National Park, the colors can not be described.

If you want to enjoy the Grand Canyon National Park without all the traffic and crowds that gather on the South Rim. Make reservations to visit Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim, take the time and enjoy the scenic drive around the beautiful canyon to this remote and peaceful piece of paradise few travelers know to visit.
